The new AFL website is one of the best examples of how NOT to create and run a website. What used to be a great website with a little bit of flash here and there has turned into this monstrosity with 13 flash components on the home page coupled with tons of AJAX. Worse - they're not cached so every time I navigate back to the main page, I have to wait for umpteen minutes on my 6.5Mbps internet connection (the bottleneck is probably at their server end) for it to reload. And there must be something about flash that kills my browser too as it struggles to handle all the scripts - my Firefox and IE7 has hung a number of times trying to load the real time stats page as I try and get the latest scores for my beloved North Melbourne (only seven flashlets). My laptop is a dual-core Pentium with 2GB RAM so what the?!? (will this make the Rove "what the"??)
If you like to take lots of risks in life, try going to the AFL website. Well done to the site admins, you've turned a great website into something unusable. Maybe it's a way to drive down the demand as more and more people want to visit your website?
